As of July 1, 2026, a new short-term federal program is giving some Medicare beneficiaries early access to GLP-1 drugs for weight loss — something Part D has never covered before. Here’s who qualifies, what it costs, and how long it’s expected to last.

Under federal law, Medicare Part D has never been allowed to cover medications prescribed specifically for weight loss — it’s one of several categories of drugs excluded from the program by statute. That changed, temporarily, on July 1, 2026, when CMS launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge: a short-term demonstration giving eligible beneficiaries early access to certain GLP-1 drugs for weight management, outside of the normal Part D benefit structure.
The Bridge operates completely separately from your regular Part D drug benefit. It uses a single central processor for prior authorization and claims, meaning your Part D plan sponsor isn’t involved in, and doesn’t carry financial risk for, drugs covered through the Bridge. That also means manufacturer coupons and discount programs can’t be combined with a Bridge claim — it’s the primary and only payer for eligible drugs under this program.
As of this writing, the Bridge covers Wegovy (injection and tablet forms), Zepbound (KwikPen formulation only — not the single-dose vials or pens), and Foundayo, added after its FDA approval. This list has already been updated once since the program launched, so it’s worth double-checking the current drug list before assuming a specific product or formulation is included.
You generally need to be enrolled in a standalone Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage (MA-PD) in 2026 — certain Special Needs Plans and other specific plan types also qualify. Beyond plan enrollment, you’ll need to meet clinical criteria set by CMS, generally tied to BMI thresholds and specific health conditions such as heart failure, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, pre-diabetes, or a history of cardiovascular issues — this isn’t open to anyone who simply wants to lose weight.
Multiple Medicare Advantage carriers have published a $50 copayment per 30-day supply for eligible beneficiaries under the Bridge. The program was originally slated to run only through the end of 2026, but CMS announced in May 2026 that it’s being extended through December 31, 2027, while a related, more permanent Medicaid and Medicare initiative — the BALANCE Model — continues to be developed. The Part D portion of BALANCE has been delayed indefinitely, so the Bridge is currently the only route to GLP-1 coverage for weight loss under Medicare.
